A Child-Friendly Study Space
This space is for students with a child in their care. It includes a desk and university computer, along with a child-safe area to keep little ones engaged or resting. You can focus on your work with your child tucked safely nearby. With student parents as our planning partners, we made every effort to ensure this space works for you.
For your convenience we’ve provided:
Disinfectant wipes for cleaning before and after use, along with a sliding sign to signal when the space is clean.
A light-blocking shade to pull across the child play area. (Note: the window shades behind you can be raised or lowered using the chain to the right of the shade.)
A stool that can be positioned on three different sides to match your child’s size. You can store the stool under the computer table when not in use.
A tablet slot for your child to use a tablet or watch something.
A padded mat on the floor. Feel free to place a blanket down if you wish.
A shatterproof mirror and two busy stations for exploration.
Colorful holes to peak out at their caregiver, or other spaces surrounding the child.
Toy Library
We have six toy bins, organized by age range. You know your child best, so please evaluate whether a toy is appropriate for your child. Some toys in the older age ranges contain smaller parts that may be a choking hazard.
How it Works
Select a bin that matches your child’s age.
Place toys from the bin into the play area, then return the bin to the shelf.
When finished, wipe down toys using the provided cleaning materials.
Return toys to the appropriate bin. Each bin includes a laminated page with pictures of the toys it contains, color-coded to match the bin.
Student Research
Students in PSYCH 327 researched and recommended developmentally appropriate toys that foster playful learning. We followed their recommendations when purchasing the toys.
We thank them for their contributions to this project!
This project was funded by a Millersville University EPPIIC Micro-Grant of $1,000. It was a collaborative project of Professor Auger, UX Librarian, and Professor Egresitz, The Department of Applied Engineering, Safety and Technology (AEST). Students in the AEST program volunteered to design and construct the child play space.
