How to get your OER published to the web

Now that you have your resources in a variety of file formats, where will they live?. Of course, you can publish your materials into your D2L course shell, but that is only available to you and your students. We are looking to have your resources shared much more broadly. If you have access to your own web server, you could put them there.  But it is more than just simply placing the documents on the web. We want others to be able to find and use them. There are purpose built web tools and services that can help with that.

Local Respository

At Millersville University, we have a Digital Repository or Institutional Repository. Ours uses software from a company called TIND. We have many collections in TIND including digitized versions of university publications and student thesis and projects. It can also be used to as the location of record for your open educational resource.

An example of this can be seen with Bob Vaillancourt's Ocean Data Course materials. Bob's course materials are published in TIND. They are furthered organized as a course ePortfolio in MERLOT which we will explore more in the Directories section. To get his materials into TIND, Bob worked with Millersville librarians to ensure that the records would have appropriate metadata so that they can be digitally preserved and discovered. If you would like to pursue this option, please contact your librarian first so that we can be sure to be ready for your submissions and assist you with completing the form.

Disciplinary or Community Efforts

Another option may be available from your own disciplinary community. Many groups of scholars have been collaborating to collect and publish open education resources. An example of this includes Chris Stieha's publications at the EcoEd Digital Library and in open access journal, CODEE journal

Other examples are the Open Social Work project and the Open Geography Education project. There are also cross-disciplinary efforts such as the Rebus Community. Each of these will have their own criteria for participation so "your mileage may vary".  But if you and your content are a match, it can be a rewarding and supportive experience.

Try browsing the list of sources indexed by the very popular OASIS OER search tool.  You may find that you are already affiliated with an organization that does OER publishing.
