Video: For Faculty

Request a Film or Video

Faculty, please work with your subject librarian if a film you wish to use is not available in a library provided streaming platform or if you have any questions about video.

Streaming Video Guidelines

  1. Copyright and Fair Use: All applicable portions of the U.S. Copyright Act should be adhered to while using streaming video in the classroom.  Proper licenses or permissions to stream copyrighted content need be obtained or a determination that use falls within the fair use provisions of copyright law. Fair use allows for limited use of copyrighted materials for educational purposes after considering (1) The purpose and character of the use, (2) The nature of the work, (3) The amount and substantiality of the portion used, and (4) The effect of the use upon the potential market .
  2. Licensing and Subscription Agreements: Streaming services often come with terms and conditions that dictate how their content can be used or not used in educational settings. Read the Terms of Use for any streaming platform or service.
  3. Digital Rights Management (DRM): Users should be aware of technical limitations imposed by DRM and refrain from attempting to circumvent DRM protections. DRM can make it difficult to capture or download streaming media for classroom use.
  4. Public Performance Rights (PPR): When applicable, public performance rights should be obtained for streaming media used in an educational setting that could be considered a public performance. Some library provided video has PPR at no additional charge, other films require a separate license for PPR.
